I guess the issue comes partially from the fact that we get three choices on that planet, and there are two paths where the X planet doesn't even appear, so the chance that someone hadn't pushed both buttons over all the playthroughs would be close to zero I imagine. I did notice the obvious similarities between the spirit cards and the buttons, but was still confused about how they interrelate (always assumed one would get both spirits all the time).
